Darren McMullen

Darren McMullen is a ‘sexy Scotsman who certainly knows how to host a show’ and has become one of Australia’s most wanted exports and leading TV personalities. Darren is a comedian, TV host, writer, producer, actor and radio jock. He has hosted, written and produced national shows on network and cable television in Australia, the US and the UK.

2011 has been a hugely successful year for Darren, fronting presenter roles across the globe.

NBC snatched up Darren as host of the new American summer adventure dating show ‘Love in the Wild’ filmed in the jungle of Costa Rica which went to air in the US and on CTV in Canada. The show is a mash up of ‘Survivor’ and ‘The Bachelor’, with a little ‘Temptation Island’ sprinkled on top. Darren the true joker and gamesman has hosted both the Australian version of ‘Minute to Win It’ on the Seven Network and the British re-vamped version for ITV 2, a game where contestants play off the wall games with off the shelf items to win one million dollars.

2012 will start with a bang as Darren will debut on his first UK primetime slot on BBC1 as host of the extremely popular Saturday night entertainment show, The Magicians. The show features a show-stopping live new format and an astonishing line up of magicians. Each magician will be paired with a different celebrity partner each week. Together they will perform three illusions, both live and pre-recorded, from the classic to the never-attempted before, after which their performances will be put to the viewers’ vote. The magician and celebrity pair with the fewest votes will then have to face a live and dramatic forfeit. Following last year’s ratings success of over 6 million viewers, the 2012 series will be extended to six 75-minute programmes which will transmit live.

Darren also lends his hosting talents to ‘Event TV’, another ‘Entertainment Tonight’ style show, which is screened in Greater Union and Birch Carroll and Coyle cinemas all around Australia and New Zealand. Many major blockbuster film premieres to have hit Australia have seen Darren as host on the red carpet and interviewing their stars in exclusive interviews. Some of the household names he has interviewed one-on-one include Robert Downey Jnr, Jack Black, Jerry Seinfeld, Jennifer Aniston, Vince Vaughan, Sarah Jessica Parker, Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams, Peter Jackson, Hugh Jackman, Deborah Lee Furness, Amanda Bynes, Jessica Simpson and Harrison Ford. Darren first kicked off his career as a “corporate whore” - nine to five, what a way to make a livin’ and all that jazz. It wasn’t long before he realised this was definitely not the life he so desperately wanted. He lit the bonfire, burned all the suits and ties and jetted off around the world with only the clothes on his back. A couple of years later, he headed back to Sydney and scored himself a job hosting a monthly car show called ‘Ignition’. It was an absolute hit with car lovers and a great jump start to his career in front of the camera.

Darren’s next job on the box was hosting Arena TV’s ‘Exclusive’, a show that he helped create. It was similar to ‘Entertainment Tonight’ and saw him cozying up to some of the biggest names in the industry…. namely Pamela Anderson, who was unable to resist the cheeky Scot and launched herself across the couch to pash him, mid interview! The Veronica twins (yes both of them) and rumoured two members of the Pussycat Dolls have been romantically linked to Darren… Itching to be the bad rock‘n’roll boy he was at heart, the Arena gig saw him breaking boundaries left, right and centre - from crashing the stage at Eskimo Joe’s ‘Homebake’ performance to getting arrested at a Robbie Williams’ concert, and even turning the crowd on Johnny Knoxville at his own premiere, dressed as one of his alter egos Jean Pierre!

Darren’s first break on commercial television was a project on Australian free to air network Channel Nine, called Commercial Breakdown in 2009. As host he dissected all sorts of TV ads, turning everything we’ve ever seen about a clip show upside down. The ads were just a break between his skits and special guests, and essentially he created a show within a show.

Since 2007, Darren’s role as MTV VJ has seen him host MTV’s Snow Jam events, free open air music festivals held on the slopes around the world, the most recent being on the mountain of Niseko, Japan in February this year. MTV has given Darren the perfect opportunity to act on his wild and crazy antics over the past few years, as host of ‘Fan vs Band’ a show that he helped to write and develop for MTV. He played a character of himself called 'Cheesy Mac'. On the surface Cheesy was an over the top cheese ball host but deep down he was a very disturbed individual. When the true Cheesy came to light, live on air, in front of his celebrity guests, reactions were priceless. Darren also hosted ‘The Lair’, MTV’s live music show. ‘The Lair’ is the epitome of gritty, dirty, rock and roll music; it has no rules and neither does Darren, it was a perfect match for him.

Through his MTV work, Darren has hung out with and interviewed some of the hottest international acts seen in Australia, as well as with breaking artists; The Killers, My Chemical Romance, Jet, Kasabian, Xzibit, Alice Cooper, Paramore, Juliette Lewis and the Licks, Hilltop Hoods, Peaches, Grinspoon, Scribe, Arrested Development, Fall Out Boy, The Pussycat Dolls, Fergie, Good Charlotte, 50 Cent Snoop Dog, Rhianna, and The Klaxons are just a few acts to have partied with Darren at ‘The Lair’.

Darren continues to work constantly as host and presenter on exciting television formats throughout the world. Looks like this is yet another Scotsman who has been given the “00” licence to kill!!
