Kim Watkins
Kim Watkins is a trusted and respected television personality with a well established career in journalism news and lifestyle programs. Kim is currently co-host, with David Reyne, on Network Ten’s morning program
9am With David & Kim, broadcast live from TEN’s Melbourne studios each weekday nationally.
Kim began her television career when she was only 12 as co-host on the popular Channel Nine children’s show
You Asked for It, later re-named
Boomerang.
The program took her around Australia, Papua New Guinea and the West Coast of America, reporting on interesting places and people. She was a natural in front of the camera, loved the adventure and variety and after 4½ years of reporting decided to pursue a career in journalism.
Kim started her cadetship on radio and was quickly recruited by the Seven Network to become a general news reporter. She also hosted her own morning show, covered the Barcelona Olympics and became the weekend
news anchor.
The Nine Network lured Kim to Sydney, to be part of the top rating lifestyle show ‘Money’. For six years she learnt the ins and outs of finance from a "mum and dad" perspective and became popular with viewers for her relaxed and no-nonsense style. During her decade with Nine, Kim also regularly co-hosted the ‘Today Show’, and appeared on ‘Good Medicine’, ‘Australia's Most Wanted’, and the Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games.
But her roots in news soon drew her back into the newsroom full-time, anchoring the 11am news bulletin and Saturday 6pm news, while also filling-in on ‘Nightline’, ‘Today’ and 4.30 news bulletins.
During this time, Kim married builder Simon Tornya and had twin girls Cameron and Ripley and their little sister Ziggy.
After leaving Nine, Kim briefly travelled through the UK, Europe, Canada and the United States, as a reporter on science and technology program ‘Beyond Tomorrow’. But the international travel proved too disruptive to Kim's home life, and when the Ten Network approached her about a hosting role on their new morning show, she jumped at the chance for more family friendly hours.
Since being with TEN, Kim's has also hosted ‘Saving Babies’, the ‘2007 New Year's Eve Fireworks’ from the Opera House in Sydney, and produced a series of reports on the plight of the Orangutans from the jungles of Borneo.
Kim has enormous commercial appeal across a wide national demographic with her warm and friendly presentation style, and is well regarded for her intelligence and credibility. She regularly MC's corporate events and devotes her energy to a handful of charities, including setting up the Mercy Breastmilk Bank in Victoria, the Starlight children's charity and the Olivia Newton John Cancer Centre in Melbourne. She's an ambassador for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and is passionate about protecting Orangutans from illegal logging and palm oil production.
As well as being a committed mother and wife, Kim still manages to squeeze in the odd bit of motor racing, twice finishing on the podium in the Grand Prix celebrity race. Kim is also an enthusiastic cook, and keeps fit walking the dog and chasing her children.
